University of Miami’s ‘OurRelationship': Transforming digital relationship support
Helping more than 10,000 couples strengthen communication, intimacy and trust through personalized, evidence-based digital support.
The Totara platform was designed to:
Many couples experience relationship challenges that affect their wellbeing, yet most never seek professional support. To address this gap, the University of Miami partnered with Mindtools Kineo to create a highly accessible, scalable digital intervention that could deliver the benefits of relationship education and support to a much broader audience.
The platform was designed to:
- Support two individual learner journeys while creating a shared couple experience
- Deliver personalized content based on relationship dynamics, user context and participation type
- Provide coaches with real-time visibility into progress and intervention opportunities
- Scale efficiently while maintaining a tailored, high-quality learner experience
- Support ongoing innovation without requiring fundamental platform redesign
Originally launched on Moodle and migrated to Totara in 2014, the platform has been continuously enhanced through annual upgrades and customizations, supporting both grant-funded services and commercial delivery models.
The solution
Totara’s flexibility enabled OurRelationship to create a highly personalized, research-driven platform that delivers tailored relationship support across mobile, tablet and desktop. Using assessments, conditional logic and personalized feedback, the platform adapts content to each individual and couple, while providing coaches with real-time visibility into progress and next steps.
Key features include:
- Personalized learning pathways tailored to each couple’s circumstances
- Coach dashboards with real-time progress tracking and insights
- Seamless integration between Adapt content and Totara for dynamic personalization
- Custom scheduling tools connecting participants with coaches
- An AI Tutor providing on-demand support, reflection and reinforcement between sessions
- Scalable reporting and automation that support continuous innovation and growth
Totara’s adaptability has enabled the program to continuously evolve, integrating AI-powered support while maintaining a seamless user experience.
The results
OurRelationship continues to deliver exceptional outcomes, combining strong engagement with measurable improvements in relationship and mental health.
- 94% of couples report high satisfaction
- 97% would recommend the program
- 63–86% completion rates, significantly higher than typical digital interventions
- Over 10,000 couples enrolled, with reach extending to 3+ million couples
Backed by over 15 years of research, including randomized controlled trials with more than 5,000 couples, the program has demonstrated statistically significant improvements in relationship satisfaction, alongside reductions in depression and anxiety and improved workplace functioning.
The introduction of the AI Tutor is further enhancing these outcomes by increasing accessibility and engagement between structured sessions. The intention here is to help users stay on track, deepen reflection, and apply learning more consistently — key drivers of long-term behavior change.
The platform’s scalability has also enabled substantial growth, including a 100%+ increase in partners and the successful delivery of a federally funded program supporting 2,500 low-income couples annually at no cost.
Importantly, 52% of couples report they no longer require traditional couples therapy after completing the program, highlighting the real-world impact of this innovative digital approach.
Totara has been instrumental in enabling this success providing the flexibility, scalability, and extensibility required to continuously evolve the platform, including the seamless integration of AI-driven support.
