A personalised, mobile‑friendly learning experience built in Adapt and designed to meet modern accessibility standards.

Case Study

The challenge

Deliver consistent learning across all devices

After reviewing their elearning authoring tools, SAP identified key gaps in their existing technology. They needed to deliver consistent, personalised, engaging and accessible learning for modern learners on any device and at the point of need.

Their business requirements included:

  • Supporting SAP’s purpose to “help the world run better and improve people’s lives”.
  • Increasing engagement and improving the experience for all learners, including those using assistive technologies.
  • Improving the efficiency and effectiveness of content authoring.
  • Reducing spend on authoring tool licences.

Partnering with Kineo, SAP set out to standardise tools, create a consistent branded user experience, and strengthen collaboration across their content development teams to improve overall efficiency and impact.

SAP

The solution

SAP needed an authoring tool that could support their purpose of helping the world run better and improving people’s lives, including for learners with accessibility requirements. Their learning experience team selected Kineo’s Adapt Authoring Tool, recognising its flexibility, extensibility, intuitive design and ability to be hosted internally. This removed the need for multiple subscription tools, reduced costs, increased reusability and ensured learning was accessible for all.

Accessibility was treated as a core requirement rather than an afterthought. Kineo developers worked with SAP to improve navigation, streamline the user journey, add support for screenreader keyboard shortcuts and refine instruction text. Named UI regions were introduced to support orientation. These improvements mean that version 4 of the Adapt Framework now automates complex accessibility tasks for designers, removing the need to manage tab order, configure button behaviour or write screenreader instructions manually. The enhancements were also shared with the wider open source community, benefiting all organisations using Adapt.

Personalisation was another key focus. Working with SAP, Kineo created a Role and Skill-based extension that allows learners to select their role and see only the content relevant to them. A Diagnostic extension was also developed to provide a pretest so learners only complete the content they need. These additions have significantly reduced completion times while keeping learning targeted and meaningful.

SAP

The results

Adapt, known within SAP as the content development environment, is now internally hosted, maintained and fully supported. It has become SAP’s standard tool for content creation, with more than 425 users across the business and over 600 courses produced, reaching around 100,000 employees.

Content developers now work in an intuitive environment that supports collaboration, enables branded and personalised learning, and allows the creation of highly interactive and immersive experiences without compromising accessibility.

SAP’s active involvement in the open source Adapt project, combined with the partnership with Kineo, has delivered benefits across the organisation. Learners, developers and the wider global community have all gained from improvements that continue to strengthen the product.

Standardising learning delivery around Adapt has made it possible to design and deliver content in a more learner‑centric way. It has also increased efficiency and ensured a more consistent and effective experience for all users.

  • “Providing accessible learning experiences that are modern, engaging, and relevant and supports the content development community for success both internally and globally has been my passion. SAP, Adapt, and our partnership with Kineo has been the vehicle to do just that. We will continue to forge ahead and evolve to meet the ever-changing demands of our learners, the organization, and the success of the content development community.”
