Empowering skills for today, tomorrow and beyond

Building a culture of learning with innovation, technology and creativity.

Case Study easyJet

The challenge

easyJet wanted to build a stronger learning culture supported by modern technology and engaging experiences. With more than 14,500 employees and a shift toward hybrid working, the organisation needed a learning environment that could grow skills, support compliance and make development feel meaningful.

Their existing Online Learning Academy (OLA), running on an outdated version of Totara, had seen little maintenance. Engagement dropped as users struggled with navigation, content became outdated and most training remained face to face, making reporting slow and fragmented. Data sat across multiple systems, offering limited insight into performance or impact.

The LMS lacked the personalisation, flexibility and usability needed to drive adoption, and the learning content itself needed a full refresh to ensure it was relevant, accessible and aligned to business needs.

To close skills gaps and deliver a first‑class learning experience, easyJet needed a complete transformation of both the platform and the learning value proposition. The solution needed to:

  • Upgrade the learning environment with a full experience suite
  • Relaunch OLA with a strong Explore, Learn, Grow identity
  • Revitalise content to be engaging, accessible and dynamic
  • Embed learning in the flow of work and build a push‑pull culture
  • Remove unnecessary customisations to create a cleaner, easier‑to‑maintain platform
easyJet

The solution

easyJet and Kineo worked in close partnership to create a blended learning experience that was engaging, versatile and aligned to the ethos of Explore, Learn, Grow. The refreshed platform was designed to build a stronger learning culture that empowered, developed and retained staff, particularly during the pandemic when many roles were displaced and transferable skills became essential.

The project began with a full overhaul of easyJet’s learning content. Libraries, courses and programmes were reviewed, outdated materials were removed and new content was added to support a range of delivery methods.

easyJet then made full use of Totara’s capabilities to ignite a blended learning approach. A mix of elearning, virtual instructor‑led training, off‑the‑shelf content and accredited programmes in project management, agile and digital literacy created an always‑on learning experience that staff could access whenever and however they needed.

Creating a seamless user experience

For the new OLA to drive real behavioural change, it needed to become the single source of truth for learning. By integrating tools such as Workday and easyJet’s People Development Hub, the team created a streamlined, uninterrupted experience that brought learning, performance and development together.

This had an immediate impact. Seminar uptake more than doubled, manual reporting dropped significantly and teams saved considerable time. Managers and employees can now link learning directly to performance reviews and KPIs, closing the loop on continuous skills development. This is especially critical for compliance training delivered across the entire business, helping keep easyJet safe, legal and operational.

Rich features that built engagement

To encourage staff to engage with learning in busy operational roles, the experience needed to be intuitive, personalised and easy to navigate. easyJet used Totara’s tagging capabilities and rich metadata to build a clear hierarchy of content, automate learning assignments and tailor recommendations to different roles.

The advanced tagging tools also make it simple for learners to explore and find what they need, while the integrated feedback tool captures all learner input in one place, supporting continuous improvement.

One platform, multiple outcomes

Aligning learning content with HR and development processes allowed easyJet to create a seamless journey from performance review to ongoing development, known as My Journey. This helped embed a culture of continuous learning, all within a single environment.

A key advantage of Totara Kineo Edition is its fully integrated learning, engagement and performance suite. This gives easyJet a scalable, sustainable platform that can grow with the business and support a wide range of learning needs.

The results

The refreshed OLA has created a stronger, more sustainable learning ecosystem. With Totara Kineo Edition, easyJet revitalised its learning offer and repositioned the OLA as the central hub for development. Improvements to the user experience, platform features and content structure have helped shift the organisation’s learning culture.

Learners can now manage their own development and certifications with ease, while administrators have seen a significant reduction in manual support and reporting time, allowing them to focus more on learning delivery.

Seminar attendance has more than doubled since launch, rising from 7,102 completions between July 2021 and March 2022 to 15,492 between July 2022 and March 2023.

Compliance completion rates have also improved, increasing from 91 percent in 2022 to 93 percent in 2023.

The new flight paths received outstanding feedback, with 100 percent of learners rating them as very useful. Ninety‑two percent said they were very likely to recommend them, with the remaining eight percent likely to recommend.
