Implementing diverse learning journeys with a Learning Experience Platform for Reece
A personalised, mobile‑first learning experience that builds leadership capability through daily, learner‑driven development.
The challenge
Reece reviewed its approach to learning and leadership development in mid‑2018 after recognising that its LMS content was outdated, overly compliance‑focused and not mobile friendly. The review highlighted the need for diverse learning journeys that could build a stronger, more future‑ready leadership mindset.
To support this shift, Reece introduced a Learning Experience Platform designed to deliver:
- Mobile‑friendly learning
- On‑demand access that supports learning in the flow of work
- Personalised content aligned to leadership moments of need
- Challenging, growth‑focused learning experiences
- Practical, interactive and role‑relevant activities
- Opportunities to build relationships and networks
This opened the door to several key improvements:
- Rapid creation and release of learning content using agile methods, reducing development time from an average of three months to just two weeks
- Adoption of blended learning journeys
- Modern, flexible and responsive digital learning
- 24/7 access on any device
The solution
To help employees realise their full potential, Reece completely rethought its approach to learning. Over six months, the business ran a series of Design Labs using human‑centred design techniques to understand employee pain points, motivations and aspirations. Key insights emerged: people were hungry for growth, they expected seamless and accessible technology, and they needed learning that fit into busy branch‑based roles. Time, space and prioritisation were critical, and learning had to be accessible on the go.
Working with Kineo, Reece scoped and built a Learning Experience Platform (LXP) as part of a five‑phase rollout. Phase one launched in September 2019 alongside the Future Leader Now programme, with phase two now underway. The platform introduced a set of leadership development journeys designed to excite and engage learners. Each journey blends spaced learning moments of 5–10 minutes a day with micro‑learning, guided research activities (Explore), action‑oriented tasks (Practice) and a coaching planner (Coach) that helps learners schedule sessions with their managers. Nine journeys have been released so far, with eighteen more in development, all created by Reece for Reece’s people.
Creating a seamless, consumer‑grade learning experience
The LXP was designed with a consumer‑grade experience inspired by platforms like Netflix and Spotify, but with deliberate spacing to avoid binge learning and support cognitive load. With just ten minutes of daily immersion, learners can build skills anywhere, anytime, creating a powerful shift in how development happens across the organisation.
By adopting emerging technologies and integrating the LXP with tools such as Workday and Reece’s People Development Hub, the business created a seamless, end‑to‑end learning ecosystem. This integration enables uninterrupted journeys from performance review to continuous development, forming a digital companion that supports learners throughout their growth. The result is a visually rich, fully interactive blended learning product that is unmatched in the market and is helping embed a culture of continuous upskilling across the organisation.
The results
The results can be clearly seen in the creation of ‘Future Leaders Now’
Through close collaboration with Kineo, the creation and testing of the LXP has been highly successful. Phase 1 is complete with 4 further phases to go.
The new way of learning;
- Learning content is designed by Reece’s people for its people with strong senior stakeholder support and campaign style messaging emphasising learning not as a compliance activity but as a competitive advantage
- Compliments busy demands of the branch and is designed to be done on the go
- Is mobile friendly and easy to access
- Contains bite sized information where learning can be achieved in 5-10 minutes a day – progress can easily be paused or saved allowing for client interruptions
- Is a blend of different dynamic learning experiences, which are made up of short videos, guided coaching sessions, self-driven research, group collaboration and workshops.
- Each core learning experience is spaced out with reflective questions and interactive reinforcements to improve learning transfer. Content is released on a weekly basis (based on a system logic model dated from course sign up date) and can be paused during busy period or when on Annual Leave
- Journeys are totally self selected to democratise the learning approach, also personalised according to different leadership level and moments of need.
The goal is to embed a complete socially led learning ecosystem, and even with only phase 1 completed to date, this is already well on its way.
